Subject: Process, styles and strategies
PROCESS,
STYLES AND STRATEGIES
A few words are in
order to explain the differences among process, style, and strategy as the
terms are used in the literature on second language acquisition.
Process is the most general of the
three concepts, and was essentially the focus of the previous chapter. We all
possess in varying proportions, abilities in a multiplicity of intelligences.
Process is characteristic of every human being.
Styles are those general
characteristics of intellectual functioning that pertain to you as an
individual, and that differentiate you from someone else. So styles vary across
individuals.
Strategies are specific methods of approaching
a problem or task and vary within an individual.
LEARNING
STYLES
Learning style as a
general predisposition, voluntary or not, toward processing information in a
particular way. Learning styles also mediate between emotion and cognition.
People’s styles are determined by the way they internalize their total
environment, and since that internalization process is not strictly cognitive,
we find that physical, affective, and cognitive domains merge in learning
styles.
FIELD INDEPENDENCE
Field independence is
conversely, the tendency to be “dependent” on the total field so that the parts
embedded within the field are not easily perceived. Field dependence is also
the synonymous with field sensitivity, a term that may carry a more positive
connotation. A field independent style enables you to distinguish parts from a
whole, to concentrate on something (like reading a book in a noisy train
situation), or to analyze separate variables without the contamination of
neighboring variables.
