Motivation
Motivation
is internal drive that forces us to do something in order to get reward. Motivation is a star player in the cast of
characters assigned to second language learning scenarios around the world.
Theory of Motivation
The
three different perspectives emerge:
1. Behavioral
perspective
2. Cognitive
terms
Some cognitive
psychologists see underlying needs or drives as the compelling force behind our
decisions. The six needs undergirding the construct of motivation:
1. The
need for exploration
2. The
need for manipulation
3. The
need for activity
4. The
need for stimulation
5. The
need for knowlwdge
6. The
need ego ambacement
3. Constructivist
Instrumental and Integrative
Orientations
It
is important to note that instrumentality and integrativeness are not actually
types of motivation as such, but rather are more appropriately termed
orientation. The instrumental side of the dichotomy referred to acquiring a
language as means for attaining instrumental goals. The integrative side
described learners who wished to integrate lation and so forth.
Intrinsic and
Extrinsic
Intrinsic
motivation is one for which there is no apparent reward the activity itself. People
seem to engage in the activities for their own sake and not because they lead
to an axtrinsic reward
Extrinsic
motivation is fueled by anticipation of a reward from outside and beyond the
self. Typical extrinsic rewards are money, prizes, grades, and even certain
types of positive feedback.
